School closures are the product (not the sum) of irrationality, cowardice and stupidity, which is badness cubed.
In a general sense, an inquisitor is one whose actions are a result of an unshakable belief in a fixed axiom or purpose. The fixed belief causes the inquisitor to become, in the extreme, a fanatic capable of committing any evil.
A rational approach to managing the current pandemic requires that we identify the correct objective function: the goal we are pursuing. A meaningful objective function would maximize both life expectancy and quality of life. Protecting against death is not enough.
